Ronaldo is advising Neymar in Russia

Neymar endured frosty relationship with Bjorn Kuipers

Neymar sees the first penalty of the World Cup voided by VAR

The strain of carrying a nation's hopes and dreams on his shoulders seemed to get to Neymar on Friday, as he broke down in tears on the pitch after Brazil's 2-0 victory over Costa Rica.

The 26-year-old is under intense pressure and, in order to help him cope with this burden, he has been receiving advice from Ronaldo Nazario.

Ronaldo knows what it's like to be in Neymar's position, given that he went through similar experiences in 1998 and in 2002, experiencing tremendous heartbreak in France and then incredible joy in South Korea and Japan.

The pair have been friends for several years and are regularly talking to each other during this World Cup, speaking face-to-face the day before a match.

Ronaldo's visits to the Brazil camp have become regular, with the legendary striker greeting the whole squad and then spending some private time with Neymar.

As well as this, Ronaldo has been publically backing the PSG star during his appearances as a pundit for O'Globo.

"We cannot forget that Neymar is just back from a very significant foot injury and that he is regaining his confidence right now," he said at the end of the Costa Rica win.

"I am sure that his goal will help to boost his morale and that things will go better for him now.

"He is trying everything, as he dribbles, runs, fights and looks for solutions.

"His goal will give him a lot of strength to be the leader of the Selecao."

Neymar's father is also offering support to the player and has regularly been visiting the hotel.

In fact, Neymar Sr. even has official Brazil team accreditation, rather than being listed as a fan like most other player relatives are.

Iceland 0-2 Nigeria | Players, coach’s ratings

Two goals from Ahmed Musa in the second half handed the Super Eagles a lifeline in Russia 2018 as they beat Iceland 2-0. The 26-year-old became the first Nigerian to score in two World Cups and also the highest scoring with four goals.

The Leicester City forward, who went on loan to CSKA Moscow in January scored a contender for goal of the tournament and then used his pace to get Nigeria’s second.

Iceland lost the chance to get half the deficit when Gylfi Sigurdsson blasted a penalty over the bar. The Eagles thus have destiny in their own hands when they play against Argentina next Tuesday.

Here are the players’ ratings.

Player Rating Explanation
Francis Uzoho 6/10 Came off his line to claim crosses and seemed to communicate better with his three-man defence. Surely growing in stature and confidence and will be very happy with the clean sheet.
Kenneth Omeruo 7/10 This was the Omeruo of old, solid and powerful in the tackle. Could have sullied his book with a shambolic moment that gave Iceland their penalty in the second half but the best Eagles defender on the day.
Leon Balogun 6.5/10 Played on the right side of the Eagles defence and was not found out. He also had enough confidence to take the ball into Iceland territory.
William Troost-Ekong 6/10 Showed some jitters on some loose balls but communicated well with his other defenders to ensure a clean sheet.
Brian Idowu 4/10 Was ineffective for the first 45 minutes and was rightly taken off at the start of the second half as he did not offer the Eagles any offensive outlet.
Wilfred Ndidi 6.5/10 Was his usual bustling self, making tackles and covering all the grass as he played slightly ahead of Mikel Obi.
John Obi Mikel 6/10 The captain played a deeper role and knitted together the Eagles with clean and adequate passes even though he needs to pass more offensively to better affect the Eagles going forward.
Oghenekaro Etebo 6.5/10 Drove the team forward, especially at the start of the second half. Should have tried to create chances instead of taking them.
Victor Moses 6/10 Moses could have done more with his direct running troubling the Icelandic defence all through the match. He needs to be more decisive when he gets one-on-one with defenders in the box.
Ahmed Musa 9.5/10 The real Super Eagle, who took on the onus to get his team the goals that were needed. His two goals were classy and commendable. When Musa is in this mood, he is almost unplayable.
Kelechi Iheanacho 6/10 Was not as effective as he could have been as he wasted some set-piece opportunities. He showed endeavour and could have scored before he was substituted.
Substitutes
Tyronne Ebuehi 7/10 Immediately improved the Eagles going forward with his composure and his triangular passing. Was at fault for giving away the late penalty but that is all part of his learning curve.
Odion Ighalo NA Not enough time on the pitch
Alex Iwobi NA Not enough time on the pitch
Manager
Gernot Rohr 6/10 It is becoming worrisome that the Eagles continue to post shambolic performances in first halves to then improve dramatically in the second. Changed the shape of his team and moved Mikel closer to the defence, which helped the team offensively and defensively.

Drogba hopes Super Eagles progress to World Cup last 16

Following Nigeria’s victory over Iceland on Friday, two-time CAF African Footballer of the Year and Ivory Coast superstar, Didier Drogba is hoping the Super Eagles will make it through the Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The former Chelsea forward, who was a guest analyst on BBC One during the game, made his opinion known after the Eagles scaled through with a 2-0 victory in the Group D clash against Iceland in Volgograd.

A brace by Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa earned the Eagles the deserved win over an Icelandic side that missed a penalty awarded by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

With Iceland and Argentina having one point each, Nigeria, now with three points sit comfortably on second spot in the Group D table behind 6-pointers Croatia. All sides have one game left.

When asked who’s joining Croatia in the last 16 from the group, Drogba said, “I hope Nigeria progress” while his co-analyst, Danny Murphy of England, rooted for Argentina.

It was a poor first half for Nigeria as they failed to have a shot on target throughout the first 45 minutes, and Drogba, in his half time analysis, stated thus:

“Nigeria have to be more creative, quicker – they need movement, overlaps, balls in behind the defence to create more space. They need to be more alive.

“They didn’t concede but at the end of the first half I could see Iceland were pushing a bit more and I think defending like this with so many players back is creating a kind of chaos.

“The problem for me is the strikers are playing with their backs to goal so it’s difficult to get time to turn for a shot. They need quality in the last pass – that is what makes the difference.”

But in all, Gernot Rohr’s men came back from the break and grabbed all three points, as they earned their first win of the tournament.

The Eagles face Argentina on matchday 3 on Tuesday by 7:00p.m.

Musa brace secures Nigeria’s first win at 2018 World Cup

Two goals by Ahmed Musa ensured the Super Eagles of Nigeria take all three points from their second group game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup against Iceland in Volgograd Arena, Russia on Friday.

After a first half without any shot on target for Nigeria, the Leicester City star put Nigeria ahead in the 48th minute before doubling the lead on 75 minutes.

Iceland nearly pulled one back after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded them a penalty. Tyronne Ebuehi clearly committed a foul on Alfred Finnbogason. But the Europeans failed to convert the kick as Gylfi Sigurdsson fired it over the bar.

Nigeria held on to the lead to earn their first win at the ongoing tournament.

The Super Eagles had a disappointing start to the tournament after they fell 2-0 to Croatia in their opening match last weekend.

Coach Gernot Rohr made some changes in the starting line up, introducing Leicester City duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Musa up front and placing captain John Mikel Obi deeper in the midfield allowing Etebo to play more forward.

The tactical approach may have paid off as his side have now boosted their chances of advancing from the acclaimed ‘group of death.’

With one point each for Iceland and Argentina, Nigeria, on three points, sit on second spot in the Group D table behind six-pointers Croatia.

Nigeria will play against Argentina next Tuesday, as they continue in their quest for a spot in the round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup.

Coutinho, Neymar goals lift Brazil, send Costa Rica packing

Barcelona forward Philippe Coutinho and Paris St Germain star Neymar made the difference for Brazil in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Group C clash against Costa Rica, as their stoppage-time efforts gave their country a crucial 2-0 win at the Saint Petersburg Stadium on Friday.

The result means Costa Rica, who lost their first game against Serbia, are out of the running for this year’s World Cup title.

Late in the game, Neymar fell in the box and a penalty was awarded to Brazil. But the decision was overturned as replays by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) showed very, very little contact as Neymar fell.

But at the stroke of 90 minutes, Coutinho finished off a set of passes in the box to give Brazil their first win at the Mundial this summer.

Liverpool striker, Firmino should have doubled their lead with a clear chance in the 94th minute, but he played it over the bar.

Brazil had drawn their first game 1-1 against Switzerland last Sunday, and with Friday’s result, they sit at the top of the group C table above Serbia who take on Switzerland on Saturday.

Tite’s men will face Serbia in their final group game next Wednesday as they continue their quest for a spot in the round of 16 stage in Russia.

Having drawn 1-1 in their first game against Iceland last week, the Argentines needed to win to boost their chances of qualifying for the next round.

The keeper received a backpass, tried to clip a little ball out to a defender and only succeeds in dinking the ball up in the air, straight to Ante Rebic who then volleyed in.

Transfer News: Manchester United Signs Fred For $67M

Brazilian international midfielder Fred completed his move to the team he says are the “biggest club in the world” Manchester United for a reported £50m ($67m) on Thursday.

The 25-year-old — who missed Brazil’s opening 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the World Cup because of an ankle injury — gives United manager Jose Mourinho a powerful-looking midfield, with the Brazilian set to slot in alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

“This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team,” Fred told the United website.

“To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.

“I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates.

“This is a very exciting time for me with my focus now fully on the World Cup with Brazil.”

Mourinho, who has also signed Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto, said Fred would add a missing component to the midfield.

“Fred will complement our other midfielders’ qualities,” said Mourinho.

“His creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game.”

Mourinho is under pressure for his side — who also finished without any silverware last season — to put up a proper title challenge to neighbors Manchester City.

World Cup 2018: Chelsea’s Hazard speaks on ‘clash’ with Lukaku

Belgium captain, Eden Hazard has played down his criticism of fellow teammate, Romelu Lukaku, after the Chelsea star accused the Manchester United striker of going missing against Panama in their first World Cup game on Monday.

Hazard, and his Belgium team-mates, struggled to break the South Americans defence in the first half, but scored three in the second 45 minutes with Lukaku scoring a brace as the game ended 3-0 in favour of the Europeans.

The 27-year-old admitted he was unhappy with Lukaku’s efforts in the first half, adding that it was difficult to play when your team was a man down.

Hazard, however, has played down the idea and insisted there was no clash.

“As the captain, even if I am not the captain I can talk, on the pitch I try to give my best, if I can help players to be better – I will,” Hazard told Sky Sports.

“I just told Romelu [Lukaku] if we want to win the game we need him, not just as a scorer to score goals, but we want him to be involved in the build-up.

“We just talked normally and we won the game in the end so it was fine.”

Hazard added, “I told Romelu at half time that we needed him. He was hiding away on his own up front in the first half.

“Even though we have good players, it is not easy for us to play with a man short.

“Once he got involved in the game, as if by magic, he scored two goals. I hope he will understand. He did not have a bad game.

“He scored twice, so everyone is happy. It is good for his confidence.

“But I want him to try to get more involved in the game, especially during the first half – as we know what he can do.”

Hazard will lead his team out again in their second Group G game against Tunisia at the Spartak Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

He said some of the inmates are repatriated to Nigeria upon the completion of their jail terms.

The envoy disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Abuja.

But the ambassador refuted the reports that Italy sometimes send Nigerian migrants from Italy to Libya.

"Never, we never sent anyone not even one single person to Libya. Some Nigerians are stuck in Libya because they were never able to cross over to Italy, but all those who went to Italy no one, not even one was ever sent back," he said.

"All Nigerians who have reached Italy and are behaving well have no problem. Not one of them not even one has heard of being sent back to Libya.

"Thank God the government is doing a lot to repatriate them through chattered flights. Thanks for the help from the European Union and the International Organisation for Migrations that are slowly repatriating them back to Nigeria."

Pontesilli noted that the relationship between Italy and Nigeria remains stronger,  stronger than ever. adding that Italy had a lot in trying to help Nigeria maintain security and stability.

He said, "This to Italy is very important, the stability and the security of Nigeria is our foremost consideration.

"We think that without a stable secure country there cannot be development. So that’s why we stand strongly behind President Muhammadu Buhari trying to establish a strong, safe and stable Nigeria.

"This to us is the number one priority of the country, we are doing all we can to support this".

The ambassador also mentioned that the government of Italy has helped train many Nigerian officials from the military, police and immigration.

ISIS warns of World Cup attacks in posters showing Lionel Messi being executed on the pitch

DailyMail

ISIS thugs have warned of World Cup attacks in posters depicting the execution of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona forward is shown in an orange jumpsuit, kneeling before a masked jihadist near the centre circle of a packed stadium in Russia.

In the foreground, a bearded extremist can be seen with a suicide bomb connected to a trigger button. A caption urges fanatics to be ‘ready and steady for the season of hunting is soon’.

Separate propaganda images show a militant examining a screen showing World Cup venues – dubbed ‘targets’ for lone-wolf jihadists.

A third shows a militant carrying a bomb on to a football field through flames while a final poster simply says ‘kill them all’.

Separate propaganda images show extremists examining a screen showing World Cup venues – dubbed ‘targets’ for lone-wolf jihadists

The mocked-up image are the latest in a near constant stream of ISIS threats against the World Cup in recent weeks.

In May, fanatics threatened to behead both Messi and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo in sickening posters.

The two superstars were shown in a mocked-up image pinned down on the pitch in a packed stadium with knife-wielding jihadists hacking at their necks.

Above the picture, released on Telegram by a pro-ISIS group, a chilling caption warned ‘the ground will be filled with your blood’.

A second poster showed a militant carrying what appears to be an explosive device in to a stadium. It comes with the message: ‘Fifa World Cup Russia 2018 – victory will be ours’.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is being played across 11 cities in Russia until July 15, when the final will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

EFCC re-opens investigation on N21.7bn IPP project

Iheanacho Nwosu, Abuja

The Economic and Financal Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened probe into an Independent Power Plant (IPP) project contract in Oghara, Delta State, valued at N21,740,000,000.

The move followed a fresh petition by a youth group, Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative, headed by Charles Adodo. He told Daily Sun that the group is planning to protest the delay in investigating its petition in Abuja and Delta State.

A source at the anti-graft agency said the commission has reopened investigation into the alleged non-execution of the IPP project. He disclosed that there were also petitions from two elders of the party on the matter. Spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, neither denied nor confirmed the alleged reopening of investigation into the matter.

Giving insight into the allegation, the source said the contract for the project was awarded by the Delta State government to an indigenous firm, Davnotch Nigeria Limited, on June 23, 2009, for the supply and installation of two Rolls of Royce Trent gas turbine generators to boost power generation and distribution in the state. It had an initial contract term of 60 per cent downpayment and completion period of 24 months.

On June 24, 2009, it accepted the offer and promised to complete the contract within the stipulated time frame and a total N1 billion was paid into its accounts in three banks on the same day.
He maintained that, subsequently, other payments were made to the same company in respect of the project. According to investigations, the total sum ofN9,829,495,000.00 has so far been paid to Davnotch Nigeria Limited.

The source explained that investigations by the EFCC revealed that the contract might have been a huge scam, as the contracting firm was directly linked to a top official in the government of Delta State. It was also alleged that at the time the contract was awarded and N1 billion paid to the firm, it was not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, due process was not followed and there was no formal agreement between the Delta State Government and Davnotch Nigeria Limited.

The EFCC commenced investigation into the contract during the tenure of Mrs. Farida Waziri as chairperson of the anti-graft agency. The investigation was ordered after a petition from a law firm, and operatives of the anti-graft agency visited the proposed site of the IPP in Oghara.

In 2010, the Delta State Elders Forum wrote a number of petitions on the same matter, which compelled the EFCC to expedite action on the matter. However, nearly eight years after the EFCC completed that investigation, no action was taken in terms of prosecuting those behind the alleged scam.

Meanwhile, source disclosed that the case file has been re-opened, in line with the policy of the present administration to recover all stolen assets and not to allow public officials get away with fraud anywhere in the country.

Similarly, Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative has vowed to work hard and not relent until the matter is investigated.

Adodo said, “Our group is Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative and we are concerned that the monies that were supposed to be devoted for the development of the nation are diverted to private pockets through corruption. This is one of the reasons we have a high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.

“So, this is why anytime and anywhere we find corruption, we fight it hard and we fight it with all that we have, in the best interest of the nation.

“In a nutshell, we authored that petition and we are ready to stand by it anytime we are called upon to do so. We can’t just fold our arms and let corruption ride roughshod over us.

“To the best of our knowledge, nothing has been done at the site of the Delta Independent Power Project at Oghara all these years to show that it is not a fraudulent contract.
“The contractor simply diverted the money meant for the project to his personal endeavours and to the detriment of the project and the development of the power sector.”

Transfer news: Chelsea table £53m for Kante’s replacement

Chelsea have set aside £53 million to sign Lyon midfielder ,Tanguy N’Dombele as a potential replacement for N’Golo Kante.

Kante who joined the Blues for £32 million from Leicester City two seasons ago, has been heavily linked to a move to Paris Saint-Germain, PSG this summer.

Reports emerged in France last week claiming that PSG’s sporting director, Antero Henrique travelled to London to hold talks about a potential deal for the 27-year-old.

It has also been claimed that the box-to-box midfielder would be interested to move to the French capital city club, but is waiting to find out the identity of Chelsea’s new manager to replace Antonio Conte.

French outfit, L’Equipe reports on Monday that Chelsea have opened talks with Lyon president, Jean- Michel Aulas about a deal for N’Dombele.

The newspaper further claimed that Chelsea have made a direct approach to N’Dombele’s representatives to plan in the event of Kante’s departure.

Lyon had earlier rejected a €40m (£35m) opening bid from Tottenham for N’Dombele and value the 21-year-old at around €60m (£53m).

During a press conference yesterday, Kante, said, “I am not concerned with all that,’ said the midfielder.

“Today, I am at Chelsea, and today I am currently living and playing in the World Cup, that is what comes first. I am not paying attention to what is being said on the club side of things at the moment.”

2018 World Cup: Xavi reveals how Guadiola has helped England

Barcelona legend, Xavi, has listed ways Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has helped England in the ongoing World Cup in Russia. Xavi also tipped Gareth Southgate’s side to have an impressive outing at the tournament.

Xavi played alongside Guardiola at Barcelona before the latter then went on to manage the team with Xavi overseeing the midfield.

Guardiola has since gone on to manage Bayern Munich and now Manchester City.

Xavi told the Mirror, last season, Manchester City were exceptional. Like Barcelona, they play possession football, so I am sure the England team will benefit from that.

“You look at a player like Sterling. He has always had raw talent – but under Pep he has become more clinical and taken his game to a different level.

“After the way he has played the last two or three seasons – and all the goals he has scored – there will be a lot of expectation on Kane who we know can cause any team in the world problems.

“Also with Dele Alli and Sterling, they have attacking players who can cause problems against the best opposition.”

He added, “For so long, Spain had the players to win but there was a mental barrier that we couldn’t get past quarter-finals. England, for me, they have had that issue.

“The England teams I was used to playing against had Beckham, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney– they were expected to win.

“This time I don’t think England has that same pressure, but they have very talented young
players – and without that expectation on them it could help.”

Alcacer no longer expendable at Barca

Alcacer no longer expendable at Barcelona. Francesc Adelantado
Alcacer in no hurry to decide his future

Barcelona were left embarrassed when they realised their efforts to sign Antoine Griezmann had been unsuccessful courtesy of a television documentary produced by a company owned by Gerard Pique, and now Paco Alcacer is no longer seen as expendable at the Camp Nou.

Los Cules had pinned much of the summer hopes on the arrival of the Frenchman and his enticing 100 million euro buy-out clause.

Had he arrived in Catalonia then there would have been a need to trim both the squad and the club's ever increasing wage bill.

Alcacer would have been at risk on both counts, and there were plans in place to sell him this summer once the Atletico Madrid forward had officially joined up with the club.

Such a scenario will not be happening now and the former Valencia academy graduate could be given a second chance to succeed with the Blaugrana.

Eric Abidal has recently taken the position of director of football at the club, and it's a view held by the administration that selling a player of Alcacer's quality without a direct replacement is simply too big a risk.

The market for attacking players is complicated, as the club found out with their pursuits of Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, and there wasn't any real stomach to get involved in it for a third occasion in order to replace the Spaniard.

It's obvious that the 24-year-old hasn't enjoyed the most auspicious spell with Los Cules since his move from Valencia, but at such a young age there is time for him to turn things around.

Such a view is boosted by the fact Luis Suarez is starting to show signs of decline and will not work through a full pre-season due to his participation in Uruguay's World Cup campaign.

At the end of the season, Alcacer left for his holiday under the assumption that his Barcelona adventure was coming to an end, such was the confidence the Blaugrana had that Griezmann would indeed arrive.

He now faces a different scenario, although there is always the possibility that the player himself may push to leave with the 2017/18 season showing that Ernesto Valverde doesn't see him as a starter.

His contract includes a 100m euro buy-out clause, making it incredibly difficult for a move to materialise unless the Catalan giants are open to a deal.

For the moment the club's focus has switched to the midfield, mainly the task of replacing Andres Iniesta.

Andre Gomes hasn't succeeded since arriving from Los Che and he will be put up for sale this summer, if there are any takers for a fee of what will have to be around 40m euros.

Thiago Alcantara is seen as the player who best fits the current Los Cules squad and club officials are discussing a situation where the Spanish international could be brought back to Barcelona after the World Cup.

Bayern Munich are open to a sale for a good price and the vast majority of supporters would welcome the return of a player who was widely regarded as the natural heir to Xavi Hernandez during his first spell in Catalonia.

Many Of You Don’t Know This! Why One Of The Portuguese Players Didn’t Celebrate With Cristiano Ronaldo

All of the Portuguese players ran to celebrate with him except for one player who had to stay inside the pitch and wondered why.

Could he be beefing Cristiano?

Anyways, the player stayed back because as FIFA rule states, if all players are off the pitch during celebrations, the opposing team can kickoff the game. And i am sure you all know what that means.

I know many of you didn’t know this.

Reactions To The Super Eagles-Croatia Match Will Make You Laugh And Shed Tears

Nigeria succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Croatia after conceding a goal in each half in their opening 2018 Fifa World Cup encounter.

Oghenkaro Etebo’s own goal in the first half and Luka Modric’s penalty after the restart condemned the Super Eagles to a loss at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

The defeat raises questions about their qualification from Group D that features Argentina and Iceland with fans taking to social media to react.

Check out some hilarious memes uploaded by Nigerians online so far:

We played our best players out of their positions’ – Okocha

Former Nigeria international, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has slammed Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr for his tactical approach that led to the team’s defeat to Croatia in their 2018 FIFA World Cup opener.

The Eagles kicked off their World Cup campaign on a disappointing note as they fell 2-0 to Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium in Kaliningrad, Russia on Saturday night.

An own goal by Oghenekaro Etebo on 33 minutes and a well-taken penalty by Luka Modric in the 70th minute gave the Croatians the win.

Okocha, who is serving as a guest analyst on SuperSport, said the reason for the loss was because the Nigerian players were fielded in wrong positions; that the team did not get the best out of Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses because Rohr was trying to accommodate Mikel Obi.

“The reason we lost was because we played our best players out of their positions,” the former skipper of the national team said.

“We didn’t have a creative player today. Mikel has been a good servant to the national team. His best position is playing in front of the defence. We saw what he did playing for Chelsea where he had a glorious career.

“The most creative player in that team is Alex Iwobi but he was played on the flanks. He (Iwobi) can play on the flanks at Arsenal because they had better players in that role like Mesut Ozil.

“Playing Mikel in that position didn’t help Moses and Iwobi on the flanks.”

Okocha, who represented Nigeria at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 editions of the World Cup, added: “The manager didn’t earn his money today. We were not a threat in the first half and I was expecting him to play three at the back, five players in the midfield and two strikers to the team a chance to get back into the game.

“It is sad because I know we can do better than this. Of course there is still hope but we have to do it the hard way now,” he stated.

As it stands, Croatia sit at the top of the group with three points, followed by Argentina and Iceland with one point each, while Nigeria sit at the bottom.

The Eagles will hope to reboost their chances of surviving the group when they face Iceland in their next game on Friday June 22.

Mourinho hails "special" Ronaldo

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a player "for special matches" following the Portugal  international's World Cup hat-trick against Spain.

The Real Madrid forward opened the scoring for his nation on Friday night and added two more before full time, the third a sumptuous free kick to salvage a 3-3 draw in the latter stages of the game.

Mourinho, whose Red Devils have been linked with a move for Ronaldo, was full of praise for his compatriot, who has now become the first player to score in eight consecutive major tournaments dating back to Euro 2004.

"There are players for some matches, there are players for every match and there are players for special matches," Mourinho told RT. "And the players for special matches are the ones."

Ronaldo spent six illustrious years at Man United and also played under Mourinho at the Bernabeu.

Missed penalty against Iceland hurts Messi

Argentina captain Lionel Messi says it hurts that his side could not secure a win in their opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup against Iceland on Saturday, blaming his failure to convert a penalty for the draw.

The South Americans, favourites to advance from Group D, were held to a 1-1 draw by debutants Iceland who put up a spirited fight against them at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow in Russia.

Sergio Aguero’s 19th-minute opener was cancelled four minutes after by Alfreð Finnbogason’s leveler.

The two-time world champions were presented with a clean opportunity to take the lead when Messi was brought down in the box in the 64th minute, but goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson – the most valuable player in the game – pushed away the penalty taken by Messi.

“We had a hard time creating chances,” Messi was quoted on Mundo Albiceleste after the game.

“We are going to go out to there to beat Croatia. We were superior to Iceland. We tried but it wasn’t to be, missing the penalty hurts.

“I’m not worried but angry and it hurts because I missed a penalty. I feel responsible for is not getting the three points.

“It would have changed everything but we are calm.

“We don’t have to go crazy. We just started and we know it won’t be easy. It hurts because we deserve to win.”

Argentina will face Croatia next before playing the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the final group game.

Odemwingie blames team selection for Eagles’ defeat to Croatia

Former Nigeria International Peter Odemwingie is of the opinion that Super Eagles could have performed better against Croatia if the team’s coaches had changed their selection when they started trailing at half time.

The Super Eagles kicked off their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium in Russia on Saturday night.

An own goal by Oghenekaro Etebo on 33 minutes and a nicely-converted penalty by Luka Modric in the 70th minute gave the Croatians the win.

Nigeria started with Francis Uzoho, Shehu Abdulahi, Williams Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun, Bryan Idowu, Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi, John Mikel Obi, Alex Iwobi, Victor Moses and Odion Ighalo; then brought in Ahmed Musa for Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho for Ighalo and Simy Nwankwo for Mikel in the second half.

But Odemwingie, who represented Nigeria at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, said he could understand the team selection from the beginning of the game, but expected it to change at 1-0.

“It’s a disappointing result and performance,” he told BBC Radio after the game.

“We only had one effort on goal which was a looping header. [John Obi] Mikel needs to play deeper in the role he is used to with Chelsea and [Alex] Iwobi needs to play in the middle.

“I understand the team selection in the first half but we should have changed it when we went 1-0 down.

“I don’t expect to win the World Cup with this young squad but we can improve,” he sated.

Nigeria are at the bottom of Group D as Croatia go top with three points, followed by Argentina and Iceland with one points each.

Nigeria vs Croatia: 5 things we learnt from Super Eagles’ 2-0 defeat

Nigeria began their 2018 World Cup campaign on a bad note, losing 2-0 to Croatia on Saturday night.

The result leaves the Super Eagles bottom of Group D.

But what other things did we learn from the game?

1. Rohr got it all wrong: We all know that 4-3-3 is his beloved formation, but it was obvious from the last friendly matches that 3-5-2 suits this team. Because it is the formation that brings out the best in Alex Iwobi, who is by far the creative hub of this team. And also free the wingbacks to provide width, while Mikel Obi and Wilfred Ndidi bring solidity at the base of midfield.

2. Croatia were not that special: For all the talk of their firebrand midfield, the Croats didn’t exactly blow the Super Eagles away. What gave them the edge and ultimately the victory, was the fine margins in football. It would be interesting to see how they fare against Argentina in their second game.

3. All or nothing: The Eagles take on Iceland in the next match on Friday. Before the tournament, this was a game we wrote off as three points. However, having played a creditable 1-1 draw with Argentina, you can’t toss Iceland aside. But for Nigeria, it will be all or nothing. Anything other than a win, means they are out.

4. Unlucky Etebo: Oghenekaro Etebo had a decent game overall. He was a mobile and energetic presence in midfield and repaid Rohr’s faith. There was nothing he could do about the first goal Nigeria conceded and I hope Rohr sticks with him for the next game.

5. Bad subs: Rohr has earned a reputation for being a ‘second-half coach’. However, his substitutions were very poor. First, he didn’t revert to a 3-5-2. And when he had to pull out a player, it was Alex Iwobi! Not Mikel Obi. Or Victor Moses. Even Kelechi Iheanacho seemed to slip onto the pitch. A real mess.

Luka Modric: Super Eagles Will Be Difficult To Beat

Croatia captain Luka Modric is expecting a tough encounter against Nigeria in their Group D clash at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Croats are pundits’ favourites to beat the Super Eagles in the encounter billed for the Kaliningrad Stadium.

But Modric has high regard for the Super Eagles and has warned his teammates to be wary of their threat.

“We do not think about the Nigerian ranking, but we know their qualities, maybe they are the best African team, they play fast and vertical football, they have very fast strikers, and in the first games there are no big favorites,” the Real Madrid star told reporters on Friday.

“It will be fairly balanced and we will set ourselves up well for the game.

”We know some people have put us as favourites to win the game and we will try to demonstrate that against a good rival. We have worked so hard in training in past few weeks.”

Croatia have never won their opening World Cup game while Nigeria are without a win in their last three opening group games at the World Cup too.

Messi miscues at the World Cup, where he cannot afford to

Lionel Messi reacts during the match. AFP
Messi has penalty saved as Iceland earn first World Cup point

His career to date has been extraordinary and Lionel Messi has won title after title with Barcelona, picking up individual awards along the way too.

Yet the No.10 has never won a trophy with Argentina and is determined to lift the World Cup to make up for the devastation of Brazil in 2014.

The only medal he lacks is the World Cup one, which is why cannot afford to put a foot wrong in Russia this summer.

Against Iceland, though, that's exactly what happened as the 30-year-old saw his penalty kick attempt saved by Hannes Halldorsson in the 64th minute.

That kept the scores level at 1-1 and saw the Albiceleste drop two vital points in Group D, the group of death, where there is little margin for error.

While Messi did well throughout the 90 minutes and constantly pushed his team forward, he missed when it mattered most.

He missed when he couldn't afford to.

Marcelo will be Brazil's captain for their opener in Russia

Neymar: I don't want to be the best in the world, I want to win the cup

The mystery around the Brazil armband at the World Cup has been resolved after the announcement that Real Madrid's Marcelo  will captain them in their opener against Switzerland.

It is a recognition that highlights the importance of the defender to the Selecao, who are one of the favourites to win in Russia.

Although it was speculated that coach Tite could change his plan and appoint a single captain for the entire competition, he will continue with the rotation system for the armband.

When he took charge of the national team, he was faced with a problem in that regard.

Neymar, fed up with the criticism from a section of the press and supporters, decided to renounce his position as captain.

When publicly announcing that decision, he insisted he would not be swayed and it left the new man with a decision to make.

Thiago Silva was removed by Dunga in 2014 after his actions in the penalty shootout against Chile, which the coach felt were too emotional, and he wanted a leader who was more level-headed.

Tite has opted to rotate the honour and in their last 21 games, there have already been 14 different captains.

On Sunday, that will rise to 22, although the number of captains will stay the same as Marcelo is one of the group to repeat as skipper.

As of now, Tite's captains have been: Dani Alves (four times), Miranda (three), Neymar (two), Thiago Silva (two), Marcelo (two, as of Sunday), Casemiro, Renato Augusto, Gabriel Jesus, Willian, Philippe Coutinho, Fernandinho, Marquinhos, Filipe Luis and Robinho.

In the event that they reach the final, all bets point to the armband for that game being handed to Neymar.

Nigeria vs Croatia: What Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Iceland means for Super Eagles

The biggest shock yet of the ongoing World Cup in Russia happened on Saturday when lowly Iceland held Argentina to a 1-1 in the first Group D match of the competition.

It all began well for the Argentines with Sergio Aguero firing in the opening goal.

But Iceland levelled only four minutes later as Alfred Finnbogason’s volley prodded into an empty net following a defensive mix-up.

Lionel Messi failed to restore his team’s lead when his 64th-minute spot-kick was palmed away by Hannes Halldorsson.

The result leaves both teams with one point each ahead of the second Group D fixture between Nigeria and Croatia. With the group favourites dropping points against the least fancied side, both teams will be going for it the Kaliningrad Stadium.

A win for either Nigeria or Croatia, will ensure early leadership of the group.

For the Europeans especially, they need to get something from the game, as they play Argentina. In the famous words of Thierry Henry, “you don’t want to play against an angry Lionel Messi”. The Barcelona superstar would not be in forgiving mood, when they come up against the Croats.

However, for the Super Eagles, this is a chance to make a big statement in the group. With their second fixture against Iceland, Gernot Rohr’s men could file out for their last group game against Argentina already qualified or needing a point to progress.

Pressure Mounts On Messi After Ronaldo's Hat-Trick Against Spain

Messi and teammates

Lionel Messi’s bid for World Cup redemption begins Saturday when he leads Argentina against an unfancied Iceland side intent on springing a surprise in their first appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Messi’s eternal rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, made history on Friday, when he became only the fourth player to score at four World Cups on his way to a hat-trick against Spain to earn a dramatic 3-3 draw.

His fellow superstar Messi is under immense pressure to secure his first major international trophy and make amends for Argentina’s loss to Germany in the 2014 final.

The Barcelona maestro was not born when the ‘Albiceleste’ last tasted success in 1986 and, at almost 31, knows that time is running out.

If Messi’s Argentina are to overcome poor form and injury woes, the five-time world player of the year needs high-profile teammates such as Sergio Aguero, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain to fire.

“I am convinced Argentina will show we are one of the best teams in the world,” coach Jorge Sampaoli said ahead of the Group D game.

They face a gritty Iceland outfit at Moscow’s Spartak stadium who say they respect their illustrious opponents but do not fear them.

Spurred on by their fans’ thunderous “Viking clap”, Iceland famously dumped England out of Euro 2016 and coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said he wanted more of the same.

“We’ve shown that if we work together as one unit, like we’ve been doing, then anything is achievable and it won’t come as a shock,” he said.

The day’s action also pits another scrappy underdog against one of the favourites in Group C when Australia play France in Kazan, with Peru facing Denmark in the group’s other game.

While international honours have so far eluded Messi, France coach Didier Deschamps is using his experience winning the 1998 tournament to prime a talented but youthful side.
“We can’t afford to get stage fright,” he said ahead of the Group C tie against the Socceroos.
“I want the lads to be relaxed and concentrated. Their objective is drawing near. They have to seize the day.”

Australia lost 6-0 the last time they met France in 2013 but the Socceroos’ Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk said self-belief was the key to securing an upset.

#WorldCup2018: Nigeria's Super Eagles are the youngest squad in Russia

Not only do we have the finest jersey, at an average age of just 25 years and 337 days,  Nigeria’s Super Eagles are the youngest squad in Russia and  captain John  Mikel Obi has urged the players to keep their nerves in check  when they play Croatia later today.

“It’s going to be very interesting because they like to keep the ball and so do we. We have a younger team so that might help us come the end of the game” Obi Mikel said on Friday.

Mikel believes the exuberance of youth may be the Super Eagles’ secret weapon.

“The players are full of energy and have a lot to prove because they’ve not played on this stage before. Not a lot of players were here for the last World Cup but I think that might be a good thing. It’s important for them to control their emotions so we have to keep that in check as well”  he told reporters.

Although relatively inexperienced, Nigeria’s squad boasts a number of Premier League regulars, including Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Moses of Chelsea.

FIFA Release 24-Man Shortlist For Best Player Of 2017 2018

It’s that time of year again when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo battle against each other under the pretence of it being anything other than a two-horse race for the end of season awards.

With France Football and FIFA ending their partnership last year there are now two awards to be won – the former’s traditional Ballon d’Or and the latter’s Best Men’s’ Player award.

On Thursday, FIFA released the 24-man shortlist of their 2017 award voted on by legends of the game such as Cafu, Carles Puyol and Diego Maradona, and it will surprise nobody to learn that Champions League winners Real Madrid feature heavily.

Of the current Spanish and European champions, seven players feature in all – namely Ronaldo, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Keylor Navas and Sergio Ramos.

Beaten Champions League finalists Juventus are represented with three players – Leonardo Bonucci (now at AC Milan), Gianluigi Buffon and Paulo Dybala – while Bayern Munich also have three on the nominees’ list (Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer and Arturo Vidal).

Barcelona, despite exiting the competition at the quarter-final stage have four players on the list (although Neymar has since departed) – Lionel Messi,Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta the other names chosen.

Premier League representation is not particularly high, with just Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Harry Kane, Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante worthy of merit.

Atletico Madrid’s Antonie Griemann and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang round out the full list of 24, to be cut down after a vote next month before the final award is given out at the end of the calendar year.

The initial nominees for Best Coach have also been released with Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane surely the early favourite to land the award. Beaten finalist Max Allegri is also in the running, as is Germany manager Joachim Low after a successful Confederations Cup campaign.

The proportion of Premier League nominees is much higher in this category with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte joined by Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino and Manchester-based managers Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola in the running.

Carlo Ancelotti, Luis Enrique, Diego Simeone, Tite and Leandro Jardim round out the list that will also be cut to three before being decided later this year.
