Messi has penalty saved as Iceland earn first World Cup point

His career to date has been extraordinary and Lionel Messi has won title after title with Barcelona, picking up individual awards along the way too.

Yet the No.10 has never won a trophy with Argentina and is determined to lift the World Cup to make up for the devastation of Brazil in 2014.

The only medal he lacks is the World Cup one, which is why cannot afford to put a foot wrong in Russia this summer.

Against Iceland, though, that's exactly what happened as the 30-year-old saw his penalty kick attempt saved by Hannes Halldorsson in the 64th minute.

That kept the scores level at 1-1 and saw the Albiceleste drop two vital points in Group D, the group of death, where there is little margin for error.

While Messi did well throughout the 90 minutes and constantly pushed his team forward, he missed when it mattered most.

He missed when he couldn't afford to.
